roost in the run?

Our chicks are going to be heading outside in about a week. We have the run almost done, and the coop should be coming next weekend (a friend is building it for us)-

The run is pretty big (tall-wise) so we can stand up in it- can we put some roosts in the run- or would that prevent them from using the coop at night?

Well you'll want to keep them locked up in the coop for a least a few days/nights so they learn that the coop is home. I personally don't see what issues there would be if you put a roost in the run, it'll just give them another thing to "play" with.

I had roosts in my old chicken run (currently a quail run) and I had a problem with about 5 chickens that wouldn't go into the coop at night.

i never had a problem with the roost in the run and we lock them in at night.... we never put them in the coop for a few days we just put them straight in the run and they were fine except for a few weeks until they got used to going in at night we had to chase them in haha

Depends on how important is it for them to be in the coop at night. If your run is predator safe and the weather's relatively mild, why not let them sleep in the run? I've had chickens survive roosting in trees for years, even in hail or wind storms they were just fine. I did have an excellent predator control dog at the time, though.

I also have a roost in my run.my chickens go into coop at night to sleep.they enjoy the roost during the day just something to keep them happy.my girls do not free range.too much danger out there.

I have two roosts in my run. My chicks go in to the coop by themselves before dusk...and stay in there till dark when I close the run door (unless they see/hear me coming...and think I have something yummy for them!)

They love to roost during the day...to take a nap, get some sunshine if it's not hot...and shade if it's too hot (it's sunny and shady at different times of the day).
