Roost Length and Size

I'm in the design phase of my chicken coop that I am building and I'm wondering what size the roost needs to be. I've looked at many of the coops on this site, but some of the pictures, its hard to tell. Also, how many feet of roost do I need for 8-10 chickens? I've heard approx. one foot per chicken.....is that a fair estimate?

A foot or two per bird. Also consider how they will access it. If they get up on a single location, then first birds make obstruct later birds. Try and make so they have more than one easy access point. If have the option, I suggest you use a 1" wooden dowel as actual piece they are to stand on. Diameter approximates typical tree branch they would roost on.
