I am new to chicken parenting and in the process of learning all i can and in designing my coop. My ETA for the new members of the family is next spring, so i am using this winter to learn all i can about raising chickens and in the design/construction of my coop. The question i can't seem to get answered concerns a roost pit. Is this the way to go and will it help to keep the rest of the coop clean, disease free, and easier to clean regularly? I understand that my flock will go anywhere in the coop, but by constructing a roost pit, does this help to seperate from the rest of the coop? It seems this would make more sense than a "droppings pan" simply because it would be seperate from the rest of the coop. Does anyone have any advice about this part of my design? Thank you

Check out my BYC page, I've used a sub-ground level Deep Litter (Pit) for many years now. I only clean it out in the spring for garden composting.

Thanks darkmatter. I enjoyed the pics.
So do you recommend a roost pit seperate from the rest of the coop?
