Roost placement

How far away from the wall should I be placing my roost? I want to be sure they have enough space for tailfeathers and to turn around and such, but want to be sure it's far away from food and water in terms of sanitation (it's a 4x4 ft coop, for four hens). I have a "starter roost" in my brooder right now which the 1 month old chicks are starting to use, but I'm not sure how much space to allow for adult chickens in the coop I'm building. I plan to use the wide side of a 2x4 to keep their feet warmer in the winter. Thanks!

15 to 18 inches from the wall but don't be surprised if they manage to poop on the side of the coop wall. They can really send out some projectiles at times
