Roost pole length

sorry, two more questions.

3 buff Orpington, open aviary with roof.

1) should I use a 2x4 for a roost or would a three inch branch be better

2) how long should it be ?

I prefer the 2x4. Make it as long as possible. There's always squabbles over roost space at bed time.

I mostly use tree branches in my run and 2 x 4 for my coop roost, both work. I agree, to make it as long as you can.

Far enough so they aren't rubbing tails on. Probably around a foot for standards, give or take.

I would put it at least 18" from the wall unless you just like to clean poop off the wall. Free ranging chickens roost in trees... but they will use what you give them if confined to a coop.
