Roost question about materials

Could I use an old large grill grate for the roost area? I plan on putting it on a frame and putting it over a tray for easy clean up. Do you think that will be fine?


Only planning on having about 4-6 hens and 1 roo.

I assume you are talking about a metal grate. I don't know where you live, but I would not. I would be concerned about the metal being too cold for their feet in the winter. It could freeze their feet.

I'd avoid metal. Just a scrap length of 2x4 with a tray below it will work fine...even a big ol dead tree branch (about 3 inches thick) would work... You will want 10-12 inches of roost length per LF bird though, so plan accordingly.
