Hi, my hubby and I are working on our first coop for our 6 RIR chicks (about 2 1/2 mo old) and we were wondering...is a wooden broomstick going to be OK for them for roosts? I was worried it might not be wide enough for them. Thanks!

They need to be able to settle their feathers over their feet to keep them warm.

A broom handle is not wide enough for them to spread their feet out comfortably.

A 2 x 4 is just the right size, but you can go a little bigger if you want!

We have bantams and we used an 8 ft 2x2 post that can be removed for cleaning, seemd to work good
