My Cottage
Hi everyone. So our new coop is being built as I type this. Here is a link to that thread.

The only thing I have not decided on yet is the roosts. The girls currently use a vintage wooden ladder and have for years. So I am wondering if it would it be less upsetting for them when we move them if we keep their current ladder in the new coop and add a new 2 x 4 or two as well, or would you just go with all new 2 x 4 roosts? Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

That's a nice looking coop! A photo of the ladder would be great:) Is it like an old wooden apple ladder with round rungs or one with flat steps?

Personally, I would move the existing/current roost to the new coop if that is in good condition. It never hurts to have "extra" roosting space, so adding more roosting options won't hurt. 2X4 roosts sound fine to me.

fwiw - Everyone has different opinions on roost styles - We used large curtain dowel rods made into a "ladder" for roosting and have had no problems, my husband even used dowels to make hinges so I can lift the whole "ladder" and hook it to the ceiling for easy cleanup underneath. You've had chickens for a while it seems, so think about what worked well in the past and incorporate that into the new one.

I can't wait to see it all finished:pop

Thanks! Yes the ladder roost is in good condition. Needs cleaned and repainted but there is nothing wrong with it per say. I think I will do that and then just add an extra "new roost" as well and see how they get on with that.

If you put a roost(poop) board along the back wall of your new coop, i think you will be happy with that. It keeps the oders down tremendously. Your new coop build is looking great!

If it fit your new coop and you like the way it has worked...no brainer ;)
If you'd like to try something different,
they'll get used to it the new roost as part of the new coop.
I wouldn't sweat it much.
