I'm wondering what makes the best roosts? I have 1 big dowel rod with 3 smaller ones crossing over it. That way my bigger older banties can use the (wider diameter) or big one and the younger ones can use the narrower ones. But I read on BYC that a 2X4 is better. Which way do you use it, wide side up or narrow side up? Are the chickens' feet supposed to wrap around the roost or sit flat on it? Thanks in advance!

By no means am I am expert, but I hear 2x4s are the best choice. Someone please correct me if Im wrong, but I think its because the chickens prefer to 'sit' on something flat. Because they are bigger birds and its harder for them to balance on a pole. Lay the board flat so the wider part is even with the floor.
Another easy solution is to put a piece of scrap 4x4 on a sheltered place on the floor, where she can't get hit with droppings. Most hardware stores and lumber mills will give those to you for free.
