I have a rooster and he has a major wound I didn't see right away. It is festering and has maggots. I'm trying all the things but is it too late?

How long has this been going on? Can you with irrigate the wound with warm water with Epsom salts, soapy water, or saline? Try to flush all of the maggots out of it. A wound spray such as Vetericyn can be sprayed on it or plain Triple Antibiotic Ointment. Maggots can hatch out over the next day or so, so repeat this flush a few more times over the next 12-24 hours. Keep him separated. Did another rooster do this?

It is from a dog bite. I washed it and used hydrogen peroxide, saline, WD-40 because I don't have any of the other maggot killer. I rinsed it over and over. The wound goes pretty deep. His big feather covered it completely and then he was messing with it and I saw the hole. I didn't realize he was attacked too. A pitbull, two actually, got almost all of my chickens. It's really sad.

Stop using WD 40 and peroxide can damage tissue with repeated use. The best thing to use to clean the wound is just saline/salt water, but mixed exactly like the body fluids pH—1/2 a tsp of table salt in an 8 ounce cup of water. Get a tube of generic Triple Antibiotic Ointment in the first aid aisle of your local Walmart, Dollar Tree or other store. Apply it twice a day after irrigating or cleaning the wound wound with saline.

I used the peroxide once to stun the maggots, they were really bad, so bad that I used the wd40. I know wd40 sounds crazy but it will kill them quickly and you can wash it straight away.
Do you think this wound looks like it won't heal? It is bad. The tissue around it is black. I will keep trying

Time will tell if it heals, but definitely worth a try. Flushing the inside of the wound, even Epsom salts water, or a disinfectant like Betadine or Hibiclens chlorhexidene for a bit, then going back to saline would be good to try. Is he able to stand and walk, and is he eating and drinking? Sorry about losing all of your other chickens. You may need to build a Fort Knox coop and run if you get more. I prefer to free range, and have an occasional loss to a hawk or raccoon, but lost several of my remaining chickens to a bobcat in middle of afternoon. If the pit bulls are around, I would keep chickens all locked in a predator proof run.
