Horrible news here. Two nights ago something got in the yard and killed Xena, our wonderful momma chicken. (I posted pictures of Xena, her boyfriend, Spurs, and the kids in Raising Chicks--Meet Xena and the Kids.) We were devastated. Xena was setting on eggs again in a doghouse where she'd raised chicks before.
Last night, at about 1:30, there was a racket outside, and went out. We're pretty sure it was a raccoon, and he had Spurs! The coon ran off, but Spurs was beat up really badly. His tail is all ripped out, bites all over. We have him in the garage, wrapped in a flannel sheet. Cleaned him up abit.
I've been reading about first aid, but will welcome any suggestions.
Oh yes, going to set traps out tonight in various places. The coon also tried to pry off the fishfood lid at the pond and has gotten into storage and ripped up the cat food bag.
