Rooster attacked - help

Our alpha rooster was attacked yesterday by a dog we've never seen before. My neighbor ran the dog off, but Mojo (my red star), no doubt protecting his hens got all the damage.

Almost all the tail feathers are gone, as well as a LOT of feathers from the whole back end. When we got home (a couple hours later) all bleeding had stopped. I can't tell if the feathers are just tore off, or if the skin is gone.

We cleaned him with saline solution and put neosporin on him last night. We have him secluded in the bathroom. Tonight we cleaned him again with saline and did not use neosporin. Thought it would be best to let it scab up.

He is pooping, eating a little and drinking a little. He's very lathargic, and will not walk more than a couple steps. His comb seems to be starting to turn black.

Am I doing everything right? Am I missing anything? Will he grow his tail back?

I think it would help if you could post some pictures so we could see how much damage there really is. In the meanwhile, take one aspirin, crush it up, and put it in a gallon of water and use this to water him with. The aspirin will help with any pain he might be suffering. Also, you could get, at the feed store, some BluKote, which is a purple antiseptic spray for horses, and spray this on his wounds. I'm sure he is in shock and should be kept warm and dark for a day or so to rest and gather his strength. I believe the BluKote will also protect him from flies and maggots. I hope he pulls through ok, he sounds like a good protector of his girls.

This is brian's wife - Jessica - HI everyone, we often talk about what happens on this board, So nice to "meet" you all. Anyway, yes, MoJo is formerly known as Micheal. Our kids decided to rename

He has become my absolute favorite pet of all time. And yes, I've had dogs, cats, birds, etc.. But we were all surprised at how much this one rooster stole our hearts. I get all chocked up each time I see his wounds not from quesiness but from sympathy. He's my baby! Guys please keep him in your prayers ;(
We took pics tonight and will be uploading them tomorrow so you guys can help us better treat him.
As for now, he is secluded in our bathroom in a dark environment with ample food, water, and .....toys. Yes toys, I felt like he needed something

~ As brian already worte, he barely moves his feet at all. I'm guessing it hurts his derrierer.

Sure hope he pulls through. I always get a lump in my throat when I hear stories about roosters valiantly protecting their flocks. I love my roosters and although I know it's their duty to put themselves in harm's way, I would be so upset and angry if something happened to any of my buddies.

My dogs plucked my rooster, Pooster. He was in pretty bad shape, missing feathers and skin. I cleaned him off, gave him a 1/2 cc of penicillin (subcontainious) for three days. I also coated him with Nolvasan ointment for three days. It's expensive but I swear by it. He slept for about three days and then slowley started drinking. He wouldn't eat so I scrambled an egg and addes some oatmeal to it and hand fed him for about a wek. I also gave him Poultry drench from an eye dropper. After a few days he started eating on his own. He is now growing feathers again. For along time he was one mad naked rooster. Pooster is now outside again and back to normal.

Yes, keep the wound moist by using antibiotic ointments as Gloria mentioned. It helps promote healing but it also helps to keep the healing skin from drawing up and causing discomfort.

The aspirin is good for the pain.

Also, as Gloria mentioned give him as much support as he'll tolerate.

This period of time can be almost as dangerous as the attack itself. He's in pain, he's away from his flock and more than likely suffering some shock. If you can close the AC vent in the bathroom, you might even want to set up a light for warmth (red bulb preferred) to see if he moves to it.
