Rooster attacking older hens

I had a cockerel biting the combs of my older hens. I put vicks vaporub on the combs of the bullied hens for 3-4 days and solved the problem. That stuff tastes really bad.

THat may work, I never even thought of it but I have used Vicks to make bucks more manageable and to discourage some weaned young goats to quit nursing.
