It makes it easier for people to keep track of who started the thread. In the case of a thread about a problem, especially with newbies, other newbies will jump in and ask questions not directly related to the original problem and the thread can become useless for the thread starter. If people don't have avatar pictures it can get even harder to keep track of whose thread it is.
