I have a rooster that keeps chasing one of my chickens. He's got her so scared that she won't even come out of the coop anymore. Then when he finally catches her and has her on the ground, the other chickens will come running over and peck at her. Poor thing is looking pretty rough. She is also making a weird sound, like she is scared, all the time. We removed the rooster and put him in a dog kennel to see how she would react. She seems to be doing better. She'll come out of the coop and eat and drink now, however she'll still make those noises. Do you know what we should do? We've been taking the rooster out every day and holding him hoping that will help with the aggression but we are scared to put him back with the other chickens so fear he'll beat this one up again. We also added 5 more younger chickens to the coop right around the time this all started, could that have been the trigger for the actions?

A bad rooster puts stress on the owner as well as the flock. Not to be crude but with roos being a dime a dozen you'll be much happier ( and so will your hens ) if you find one with suitable traits that benefit you as well as your flock. I also wouldn't return him to the flock unless and until the isolated hen has made some alliances that rank at or above the mid level. Once returned I'd give him one chance to straighten up and fly right or he'd be out, out, out. He can ruin your flock harmony for years to come if left unchecked and the hysteria attacks continue. There will always be someone .... once he runs the current victim to death.

I don't eat chicken myself but I hear it tastes especially good when a rooster is unsuited for his role.
