Hi there! I'm new to breeding chickens and I just had a few questions.
Why does my rooster only have a select few hens in my flock that he's choosing to mate with? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Is he just still working on getting to the other hens? And how long till I start getting fertile eggs from most, if not all of my hens?
Also when my rooster mates with one of my hens sometimes my other hens will run up and peck at the hen being mated or my rooster, why is that?
Thank you for the help!

Welcome to BYC. If you put your general location into your profile people will be able to give you better-targeted advice. Climate matters and in this situation it may matter if you're experiencing spring in the northern hemisphere or autumn in the southern hemisphere.

How many males and females do you have?

What breeds?

How old are they?

Will do! Thank you

I have ten hens and two roosters. All are about a year and a half to two years old.
My roosters are Silkie and Easter Egger
My hens are Silkie, Easter Eggers, Blue Plymouth Rock (Sapphire Gem), Wyandottes, Black Sex Link, and Buff Brahma

OK, so all of them ought to be mature. Are the hens all laying?

If any are still coming out of their molt and not laying yet the roosters aren't likely to be mating with them yet.

With spring advancing the hormones should be flowing and fertility should be improving. :)

Yes all of my hens are laying and have already fully molted. Thank you so much for your help!
