My Bantam EE rooster Lurch will prep the nest boxes after I change the bedding in all 4 of them. He calls to the girls similar to when he finds treats for them. My standard EE rooster takes no interest what so ever in the nests unless a girl makes a strange sound while laying he will look in on her. While my LF Cochin Stumpy goes on guard duty while his girls are laying. He gets his attitude up and I just pick his big fluffy butt up and carry him around for a bit. Lil stinker.Glad I have the 3 different types so far!

Well found a bunch of eggs around the farm,and 7 of what i cracked were all ferile.

I have a rooster with one wing...when young a coon reached in the coop and got a quick meal..I was gonna put him out of his misery but I observed him eating,drinking,and scratching the ground like he wasn't all that bad off. Now several months down the road he's all healed up and about ready to be eaten. It's funny to watch him flap is wing...little unbalanced.he healed quite quickly btw

Do roosters show them where to nest or brood.I rhought it was where to lsy eggs.

No, the hen picks her own nest spot.

Not if you have a rooster who is doing his job. Here is my Buff O rooster Red. He was my surprise rooster in that he was supposed to be a pullet. But he grew into a fine rooster that hasn't given me a moments worth of trouble.

When he was about 5 months old I caught him lounging in one of the nesting boxes where he was chattering away to a few curious hens and carefully arranging the straw around him. He was showing the hens where the best place to lay their eggs was. Now granted, when they started laying, they chose a different nest box than the one he showed them but that rooster did his best to help out his hens.

I was lucky enough to have a camera with me one day and caught him in the act:



I like the totally unimpressed look on the hen's face.

My year-old rooster is like this! I've only had chickens for a little over a year, so I thought he was just really eager & excited to be around a bunch of hens.

My young cockerel is driving me crazy. He is overbreeding my hens. Two actually have scabs on their backs. I have 10 hens for him. I know he is young but I am thinking I need to rehome him. He is an orp. He is huge compared to my hens that are small to medium size. I don't want to go the apron route. If I make him his own pen then that kind of defeats the purpose of having him around. Will he learn and quit mauling the hens? One has no feathers left on her head.

His hormones are racing...you could isolate him for a few months....he might settle down, they all seem to go through the frantic sex crazed bird stage, before they calm down...although I have eliminated cockrels when they get to aggressive with the hens. I won't allow them to hurt my girls. A bit of chill time won't hurt him.
