Oh, how I love those first few crows! We had a rooster once whose legs were so long, he was like a gangly teenager. Whenever he tried to crow, hed lose his balance.
(He did eventually get the hang of it.)
Mine normally start at four or five months, but as other people have said here, it just varies depending on the situation in your flock and on individual personalities. I also have hens that crow, even though I also have roosters.
Don't be sure a crow or a strange YAWP from a young bird always means your baby is a rooster. One of my girls used to crow and fight with the boys until she laid at about six months. For a long time I was afraid she was a henny-feathered boy. However, she's now a very good layer.
