I've had my My Lavender Orpington rooster for a couple months now. He is a great rooster - respects people and good with the ladies. Within the past week, however, he has woken us up twice around 5:00 crowing. He's never done that before. I'm not so much concerned about him disturbing us as maybe there is something wrong. The second time my dad went out to see if there was anything disturbing him but he was just standing out in the run crowing, for no apparent reason. Is he just deciding to crow early or do you think he is trying to alert us?

If you do find yourself worrying about your coop though, you can get motion sensor lights. Since chickens are night blind if something DOES come after your bird during the night there isn't a lot your roo will be able to do about it after dark (except hollar for you, of course!)

Having motion lights is a huge weight off my shoulders bc I know my roos will be able to do more then just curse out an intruding opossum or raccoon!

((Also, isn't just GREAT to wake up at 4-5 in the morning?!? ;) ))

Ok, just making sure! We only hear him because he is standing out in the run because I leave the pop door open at night. All I have to do is close that door and I won't be able to hear him from the house! :)
