On 13 May while I was out of town one of my hens was apparently attacked by other hens as there was no sign of entry from a critter. At first he thought she was just sick, but Upon examination by my son she had several holes in the back of her neck with ants in them. He culled her and unfortunately he didn’t do the best job or she did what chickens do and ran around with her head cut off. Unfortunately she ran around the coop where all the other chickens were and they started squawking and shrieking understandably. I returned home from out of town that same evening. Two days later I noticed that my rooster was making a very strange crow, almost like I have to throw, as if he had a sore throat. since then he has stopped growing altogether, he does not get up on the roost with the other hand, he frequently just rests on the ground. He is not trying to mate with the hens or find food for the hens. His feathers look horrible and are all droopy. He has been treated for coccidiosis, mites and lice and worms. His comb and waddles are extremely pale. Upon inspection there are no mites or lice on him or on any of the other hens. Another hen is becoming very dominant and starting to attack some of the lower in the pecking order. Does anybody have any experience with something like this that you could give me suggestions or advice? This is been going on now for more than 3 weeks.

He may be sick. Check the bottom of his feet for wounds. Sometimes they can get infection in the bottom of the foot and won’t roost. It has to be treated or it will kill them.

Thank you for your reply. I have checked his feet and they are fine. His appetite is good, he’s just being mopey and won’t crow or make any sounds.
