I know that few roo's are needed in a flock and realize that they offer a leadership role and alert system as well. But I don't think I have ever read this question...What are the Rooster's main functions in a non breeding flock? What should they do well (desireable behaviors) and should avoid doing (undesireable behaviors) ? What makes a good roo GOOD??
My best guess would be a good rooster keeps order in a flock. He keeps his hens happy and finds food for them. Alerts them anytime he thinks they could be in danger with a quick crow! Will attack the cat/kid/even adults (bad rooster) to protect his girls.
I misspoke when I said a flock NEEDS a roo, as laying flocks do not... but I would like a couple as long as they are good employees. Otherwise we may have to downsize!
