Rooster fight - why did he die?

Something I do when hauling birds under conditions to promote heat stress is to wrap frozen water bottles in a towel and place in the box so bird stands on it during transport. Such is less traumatic they ice water treatment described above.

So it must be effective to cool the bird via the feet, as they aren't usually feathered. It would make sense that varieties with leg feathering would have less bare surface area for cooling.

The feet are one of the major routes for dumping heat in a lot of warm blooded animals. Being able to stand on cool ground delays the employment of other cooling mechanisms like spreading wings and panting. The latter two options require additional energy while panting also compromises the bird;s ability to conserve water.

I think I just stopped worrying about frostbite. Now, almost instantly, worrying about overheating already.

My birds most stressed by heat during spring as temperature gets warm for the first time. Their metabolism apparently needs to slow down after fighting the winter cold. The slow down takes a little time.

I have observed that too. They certainly aren't showing the level of heat tolerance right now that I would expect in the summer.

Wishapup, so sorry for your loss
