Hey y'all,

My rooster has been dealing with this foot infection for close to a year. Last summer I noticed it, it was a small red bump that seemed to cause discomfort.

It seems to be festering and getting worse and I'm not sure the best course of action.

I treated him for leg mites last year, the treatment seemed effective and his scales went down. However, the foot with the infection seems to have the issue again. Maybe the mites are back? Could it be multiple issues? His skin is definitely swollen and red. It's warm to the touch and causing him discomfort.

Attached are pictures. Thanks for any insight or ideas. Sorry if my rustic rooster looks like animal cruelty 😬 I'm trying my best. This guy can't seem to catch a break.

If he were mine I would start doing some daily soaks in warm water with Epsom salts. Afterward when dry, then apply vaseline and rub it into the skin. Ivermectin pour on can be used once and again in 14 days, and the dosage is 0.1 ml for every 2 pounds of weight. But the skin of his legs really needs to be treated as well. Are any other chickens affected by leg mites? It might be good to do a good clean out of your coop bedding, and spray some permethrin inside the coop before adding fresh bedding.

I recently cleaned and sprayed permethrin in the coop. No other chickens have the mites. I'm not positive he has them now, even though his scales are raised. I plan on doing the epsom bath, Vaseline won't hurt anything so I'll try that as well. I have ivermectin on hand so I'll treat him with that as well, but I really don't know how to get his skin swelling down. It's puffing up almost like a bumblefoot but it's clearly something else going on - I think.

Maybe I need to give him some fish mox? He's easy to work with so whatever treatment he needs, I can apply it.

Thanks

One of his nails chipped last year and you can see the end of his toe is also swollen. I think he has a foot infection
