My 3-year-old rooster of questionable descent (maybe White Sex Link and Iowa Blue) stopped crowing and just stood in the run with his head tucked into his shoulders for a few days before he was found dead in the coop with his wings splayed out sideways. His face and comb looked darker colored than the rest of his comb and wattles. I don’t have a way to tell if he’d been eating or not. I feed a mix of layer pellets and corn with table scraps. He lived in a large run with many other hens and roosters and some ducks and guineas. I don’t want the rest of my birds to get sick. Does anyone know what happened?

Did he have any symptoms of a respiratory disease? Heart problems can cause a dark comb. Really, the only way to know what caused his death, would have been a necropsy performed by your state vet. The body needs to be kept cool, not frozen, and taken or sent to the state lab with in a day or so after death. Some of us do simple brief necropsies at home to look at the insides of the crop, gizzard, and view the intestines, liver, heart, and other organs for anything obvious. If you see any others becoming sick, post here for help. Sorry for your loss.
