Rooster has started attacking

He is a beautiful bird, but there are lots of friendly, non-aggressive roosters out there that are just as beautiful. I would suggest getting rid of that one, and not replacing him for a while. Let your kids get used to their friendly hens and enjoy them instead. Keep your chickens in a coop with attached run until the hawk gives up and moves on, or only let them out when you're around to keep an eye on things. Often times a dominant hen will take on the role of alerting the flock to danger, just as a rooster would.

Your children need to learn to relax and move slowly out there; very difficult for a toddler! They need time to get over this miserable experience. At least until next year, or longer.
Then, raising a nice cockerel may work out. Cochins and Salmon Favorelles come to mind.

We got him by accident. We didn’t know much about chickens when we got him. My husband found someone retiring from the chicken business so he went pick a couple out of probably 30 or more. The man just grabbed him and said he was an amercauna hen... to me, he honestly looked like a hen at first. Must’ve been very young at the time. Then one morning happened to hear some crowing from the coop. Then he blossomed into this big guy. Oops!

Lol that chicken looks nothing like an Amerecauna, and he should have known. You got tricked.
