Hi BYC! I am a relatively new chicken .momma and have an unusual flock and maybe an unusual question. We have an Ameracauna chicken that is about 10 weeks old. I am hoping against hope that it is a hen,

but lately I have seen it "mounting" its surrogate mother! Is that unusual for such a young bird? It has some other habits that seem unusual for a hen but since I am so new at this, I'm not sure. How soon should I be able to tell hen or roo? We can't have a rooster in our yard btw....

Welcome to BYC!
Try posting pictures, at 10 weeks we can at least make an educated guess. Follow the link in my signature line if you don't know how to post pictures.

The one on the right. The one on the left is Her/his "mama". She is a bantam cochin and she is about 6 mos.We had to give her some babies cuz she was super broody!

Yes, that's what I was thinking too! Thank you for your welcomes and your answers to my question! I appreciate your seasoned eyes.

Now for a further question...does it seem too early for this randy roo to be trying to mate? And fertilized eggs should just be handled the same way right? For eating, I mean.

My sebright bantam rooster started mating with my girls at around 16 weeks, if I remember right.

Fertile eggs are the same as unfertile eggs taste wise. You won't notice any difference. They are perfectly good to eat.
