We want to put our one rooster in the coop with our 6 laying hens. We are concerned about their food though - I thought roosters needed more protein and the feed for layers isn't appropriate for them. Any suggestions from anyone on what to do, or do we really need to be concerned about this?

I don't have a Cockerel or Rooster.
I feed all my Hens and Pullets over 10 weeks old a Non-medicated Starter Grower or a All-Flock/Flock Raiser with 18 to 20% Protein with Oyster Shells separately. 20181214_095753.jpg . Those feeds are good for all ages and genders of Chickens. GC

Cock/erels do not need more protein than hens.
It's the extra calcium the layer feed that can cause problems in non laying birds.

Oh, and...Welcome to BYC @fdlinson !

Yep, I agree that All Flock or Flock Raiser is your best bet. I've found that it works best in the spring when new chicks arrive and get mixed with the rest of the flock. I don't have roosters, but the higher protein content is helpful for molting season and growing new feathers, and also getting through winter. I always offer oyster shell in a separate container so I haven't found the need to ever switch back to layer feed.
