Good morning all,
Yesterday my dog pushed his way into the chicken yard. Pushed the gate open and off he went. When I first saw what was happening, he was streaking across the chicken yard right on the tail feathers of the rooster. Got him down to a corner of the yard and I thought it was all over, felt so bad for the rooster, he was making a horrible noise. Had grabbed the leash when I first saw the dog and ran into the chicken yard, chasing the dog chasing the rooster. Was still about 30 yards away when they got to the corner and was just sick at the sight. Got down there to them, snapped the leash on the dog, got him away from the chicken (with great difficulty) and lo and behold--the rooster got up and ran off.
I was very relieved when I saw him up and running away. Yesterday he was walking around, seemed to be OK, but definitely was subdued. Last night when I went to close up the chicken coop, he was bedded down on the lowest perch, not on the highest one as usual. This morning he is alive, walking around, but I haven't heard him crow at all, and haven't seen him stretching out his wings like he normally does. I can see a red bare-looking patch on his rear end, and am wondering if he can recover fully from the attack.
He is just not his same "I'm-the-greatest-thing-alive" self. What do y'all think, surely he's not the first to survive an attack. Any advice, suggestions, comments welcomed. Thanks.
