Rooster Maurice in noisy French court battle with neighbours.

A rooster named Maurice, whose early-morning crowing got under the skin of his neighbours, has become the focus of a court battle in France.

The cockerel has been accused of causing noise pollution by a retired couple with a holiday home on the picturesque French island of Oléron.

His owner, Corinne Fesseau, says her cock is simply doing what cocks do.

Neither Maurice nor his accusers were present at court in the western town of Rochefort for proceedings on Thursday.

But the rooster, who has become something of a local celebrity, received a show of support from cockerel owners who had gathered outside the court building.

The complainants, Jean-Louis Biron and Joëlle Andrieux, built a holiday property in the village of Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron about 15 years ago, which later became their retirement home.

One of the reasons they chose the region, they said, was because of its tranquillity. But problems with Maurice, and what they described as his excessively loud crowing, began in 2017.

They complained to Ms Fesseau, who has lived on Oléron for 35 years, provoking a disagreement which became a headline-making dispute.

For Ms Fesseau, and her supporters in the local community, the issue is simple - cockerels are part of the rural way-of-life, and is it unreasonable to demand an end to their crowing.

Whether something will need to be done about Maurice will now be considered by the court, with a verdict due in September.

I read a different article about Maurice and the entire case.
I think Maurice will win!! He should. If you don't want to hear roosters, don't live in the country.

I hope the rooster wins! I hate stories about "excessively loud crowing". If we held people to the same standards of 'annoyance' there would be no people left on earth.
Jeez!! Go Maurice!

Heck, last night is a good example (for us Americans!) How many people light off fireworks in the country on the night of the 4th? How many people out in the country have livestock that can be thrown into a panic because of those fireworks? And who lights them off? The city people who moved there because it was peaceful.

My two are outside right now having a crowing duel, as they do most mornings. I honestly don't even hear it most of the time any more. To me, loud roosters means happy, healthy roosters. I LOVE the sound of country. My brother in law, who lives in the city, on his last visit commented on how 'loud all the birds are', meaning the regular songbirds, crows, jays, etc. Well, I guess they are loud if you've never heard them before!

People get strange notions. There are quite of few people I'd liked to silence (in a non-thug like terminology:)), made to move far away so I don't have to listen to them. I live in a village. All the neighbours love hearing my cockerel doing his thing. It is calming. Nature has rights.
I can't stand fireworks. Not anymore. I could sit and listen to birds all day. :)
