A few minutes ago I noticed my rooster was injured. He has half of his toe ripped off and bleeding. The injury is very fresh and he’s still bleeding. He hasn’t acted any different, no limping, he’s still scratching, and he’s acting normal. The 1st question is what should I do about it? The second is how it happened. He’s the only rooster I have, but I do have 4 drakes. He lives in an enclosed pen, so no hawks and other animals could get him. The only other animal I have in the coop are hens. I can’t figure out a reason this would happen so I came here to ask.

The picture allows very little observation of the injury.

If hemorrhaging is occurring, apply firm pressure to the area with a dry towel until hemostasis is achieved. Secondary thoughts should be placed on preventing infection of the toe; initially, the area should be lavaged to debris any bacteria, or dirt; keeping the bird on soft clean grounds, and applying an antibacterial spray, or ointment may further help accomplish that goal. If a clean environment cannot be achieved, bandaging may be indicated.

Toe injuries can occur due to getting the toe lodged in spaces, resulting in separation, or due to predators.
