Hi everyone. I've raised a lot of chickens and have had my share of aggressive roosters. But never have I had a rooster be friendly then suddenly turn on me. Nothing has changed and there's no new hens. I feed them as always and as I turned to walk away he got me pretty good on my legs. Then was going at me again! Since then I've been scared to go out there and enjoy my chickens like I use to. Any suggestion. Is there any tricks to stop him?

The single most effective tool to tame an aggressive rooster is to send him away to freezer camp. There he will learn to be a happy table chicken.

I’m sorry to hear about the recent change in your roos personality- aggressive roosters can be terrifying! Is there anything that could be upsetting him? The only time I had a roo turn on me, I discovered the children that lived next door had been throwing rocks/ harassing my flock. I wonder if something has been aggravating him since it sounds like no other changes have been made to the flock.

I don't know. We live out In the country but in a small town. I let my chickens free roam. I don't have fencing around my lots or home. But they never leave the lot. There are other homes around us but I'm not outside all day to see if anyone is harassing him. I have a male goose that is very good about letting me know if anyone comes close or is walking by though. I was just hoping that maybe someone had some old tricks up their sleeve that I could try before I go and get rid of him. I hate to do that, but I would also like to enjoy my chickens and little chicks as well without having to look over my shoulders every few mins.

I totally understand- it’s hard to enjoy your chickens when worrying about a sneak attack. I love that your goose is the guard dog! They are such wonderful creatures. I hope someone has advice for you so you don’t have to get rid of your roo!

Since I'm a animal lover I certainly would not send him to freezer camp as someone suggested. Sometimes they can be in a bad mood or scared somedays. I have a small rooster and sometimes he can be a little feisty. I just grab him and put him in his cage alone for a bit. If you are going to be scared all the time the either sale him or give him away to a no kill shelter or a friend.

How old is he?
If you've had your share of aggressive roosters, what did you do about them?
