Other members on this forum have kindly identify my chicken as a roo. I am now wondering why he doesn't appear to have any interest in mating with the hens. He would be at least 20 weeks old - probably older.

This is the roo

nice looking group you have there!

Frist your rooster is young yet so give him time. Also he looks like he might be the quiet type.... he may be mounting the girls when they envite him and you may not always see it. If that is the case than he is a keeper.

Because he isn't mature enough. If he hasn't even started crowing, he surely isn't mature enough to show any interest yet.
Give it time.

He probably is giving them more attention that what you see. I know with our roos, they do mate with the hens, but it's so fast you have to really be paying attention. One way to check to see if he is doing the deed is to crack open an egg that one of the hens lay (if they are laying). A fertile egg has a bullseye in the yolk. Thank you for your replies. I really wish I could keep him as he is a lovely bird. Unfortunately council regulations mean I will have to find him another home. Because he isn't crowing yet I was just hoping to have him long enough to get some fertilised eggs. Unfortunately, the first crow he makes he'll have to go.

He's definitely a roo, gorgeous and healthy, it's a shame you will have to give him up. I have 4 roos and some are just not as aggressive with the ladies as others. Just like people, some guys like the ladies to make the moves.

As far as crowing, I have one that doesn't crow much at all, but still mates and he's a year old. Maybe you will be lucky and have a quiet guy too.
