I set up nestboxes the other day for my two serama(?) pairs. They are 12 weeks old. The rooster of the one pair, Attila, is the only one going in there at all. He will even sit down in there to chill. Is he trying to show Sunny that its okay/safe in there or is he just being goofy? Also does anyone know when I should be expecting them to start laying? They are from ebay eggs and are probably not pure serama but very small still. Also when is the soonest I should I switch to layer feed? I feel like the regular sized pellets would be too hard for them to eat. Is there a brand that does mini pellets or should I just buy the layer crumble?

They are on purina flock raiser is that all flock? Any suggestions on where to get oyster shell for them for a good price?
That's not All Flock. I think it's better and is a good feed for a mixed flock.
You can get OS at the same place you got the Flock Raiser most likely. It comes in 50# bags and is relatively inexpensive.

So you're saying all flock is better or all flock? I just don't want to get them the wrong stuff. Especially when they do start to lay.

Flock Raiser has 20% protein.
All Flock has 18% protein.
That is the most significant difference between the two.
Either will work with OS on the side.

Roosters will scout out nest sites for hens and present them when they escort a hen around while she searches for a place to lay her eggs. My senior rooster shows the hens many options he seems very proud of finding. The hens appear to humor him but always go lay in the main nest boxes at the end of the tour.

I use all flock and flock raiser interchangeably, otherwise I fully agree.
