I've noticed my roosters tend to be shortlived compared to the hens (everyone here dies of old age)...is this normal? And no..the roos aren't getting clobbered with shovels..they are dieing all on their own

That is weird... I just read a gardening article where the author photoed her 15 year old rooster. My mother's neighbor has a 12 year old roo... and I heard if let be both hens and roos can live well into their teens!

To a certain extent age depends on the breed. Of course, this is with all else being equal (good management, good feed, etc.).

Games typically are some of the longest lived fowl. saladin
