Rooster Mating Youngsters

My rooster who is a 9 month old Rhode Island Red has been mating my six week old chicks. Most of them still hang around with him. Is this a problem?

Yes, they are too small to be in the same pen. They could easily be hurt. JMHO

The problem is the imaturity of the rooster. I often keep youngsters in a large pen under the policing of a mature cock. Never a problem. But this isn`t helping your problem. Citygirl is correct and either the chicks or the rooster has to go. In my world, the rooster would be placed in a smaller pen until he matures in a few months and learns his manners.......Pop
