The night before last my rooster was attacked by a coon. His comb was severely damaged. Since this happened at 1 in the morning, I had to treat him the best I could. Our local vet does'nt treat poultry. I used triple antibiotic cream after and saline after removing part of the comb that was just hanging by a thread. He's not eating but drinking a lot. I don't want to see him suffer, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Wow, I am glad the coon only got a hold of your poor rooster's comb. You checked him over good to make sure there are no wounds under the feathers? He might be coming out of a state of shock still, which could explain his not eating. I'm glad he is drinking though. If there are any treats he likes, try offering him some to spark his interest. When I had a chicken in shock after an attack, it took a couple of days for her to start eating.

Hopefully, because it does not sound like he has any puncture wounds or bites, the antibiotic cream will prevent any infection. Keep smelling the wounded area, and if it starts smelling worse then you may need to treat infection with an injection of Pen G (Penicillin from farm store).
It doesn't sound like you rooster will need anything but the topical antibiotic cream for the comb probably.

Roosters are pretty good at recovering from comb issues. It is like an extra appendage as far as I am concerned. As scratch'n'peck says, clean the wound as best as you can and use antibiotic cream. I have rescued a lot of birds with ripped off wattles and combs, frostbitten combs, etc. The roos are pretty good to recover from these injuries.

Keep up the good work and sure, why not give him or offer him a fav treat(s) He'll bounce back, may look a bit weirder but alive :) Steve

I need some help. I cannot find any vets who will see my rooster and he is getting worse. Long story short, he was attacked by a dog, very little damage. Other rooster waited till that night to attack him and now he smells really bad, the wound is turning yellow even with Blue Coat and I am worried. Please help

Flush the woumds with 50/50 water betadine solution, gently pat dry. Then apply neosporin (without pain reliever) to the wounds. If there are punctures, pack them with neosporin. No need to bandage anything. Use neosporin on a daily basis as necessary. You can also give him penicillin injections if you wish, but keep in mind that there might be internal injuries from which he might not survive.
