My rooster is still young (maybe 7 months) and seems to have adjusted well into his position. My chickens are currently in 4 separate runs due to space. Occasionally I’ll let them all out at the same time to free range the back yard. I first tried to bring my rooster up in the pen with my oldest girls but they were just mean to him and had him scared so I eventually moved him to my younger flock and he started to thrive there. When I have them out he still mostly avoids the older girls but will occasionally try to stand up to them. He tries to mate with all the rest of the younger hens except one. He gets her to squat but instead of mating her he goes around the front and kicks her in the face. I just don’t get it. She’s the only one he’s done this with. She is not one who is normally in his pen but he mates with the other hens from her pen. The only thing I can think of is she looks just like one of my meaner older girls that bullied him so could he be confusing the two?
