So I’ve got this 2 yr old bantam Cochin rooster that is very friendly. When ever I cup my hand over his head he likes to go to sleep lol. I was wonder why he did this. I’ve occasionally been able to get some of the other hens to do this as well. Also when I scratch his neck in certain spots he stretches his neck looks down and almost preens himself under his waddle. I guess he likes it lol

Yes, you are correct. They like being stroked and petted. Not all chickens, but I'd say a good third of them enjoy being touched.

However, it's a sensory reaction when they relax and close their eyes when you cup a hand over their head and eyes. It simulates cover, and this generates a sense of peace and security.

I do this when I need to calm down a bird that is upset by some necessary handling.
