Rooster Noise

I have 80 acres all the way across the back of his 1/4 acre, right up to his back yard. Would making a 50 foot long, 9 foot high berm of earth block most of the noise?

My roos crow. I have 11, but I can get fed up with them also. I have many neighbors who raise Games. I have Game hens (they lay like crazy) and they are sweet birds. I have 3 neighbors though with probably 8 hens a piece and a minimum of 50 stags. I can't say for sure they are fighting them. Never seen anything even suspect. They ARE loud though and crow all day long, which gets my boys going. I toss treats to shut them up. LOL

One thing I noticed at the Stockton show out here were how beautiful and well taken care of the Games were. The other thing I didn't notice until I got home, was one of the birds I had admired was being brought home that night by a neighbor. I remember seeing that big beautiful blue ribbon at the show, so he's doing something right. I do understand about all the crowing though. I know if I over feed a little some days, my birds would rather rest and dust bathe. I say take him some treats. LOL

Good luck with finding some quiet though.

I can relate to the coon dog noise. I live in th country, to set the setting. My closest neighbor is across the street and about 2 city houses down from me. My other neighbor is about 3 city houses away next to me which is also a relative. Anyway the neighbor across the street was one of those bad attitude neighbors with no reguard to his neighbors or the safetly to hs dogs or drivers n the road that had many accidents from trying to avoid running his dogs over. He had a female coon dog he kept on a chain and practically pregnant all the time. So we not only had to liten to her all day and night but her puppies. Then everytime we went outside we where barke at by their loose dogs anytime day or night.

I don't know if it's wrong of me to say but since he commited suicide I haven't had to listen to the constant barking of the dogs and the loose ones have managed to get themselves ran over. The mans widow still lives there and she has a dog that is contained and hardly ever barks.

Now....................my guineas are the ones that make the annoying noise. They are so loud. I didn't notice it till all the noise was gone from across the street. That man that ws there was also raising Asil and they where for the wrong purpose but he did sell all of them. Thank goodness. We had a similar conversation a couple of years ago. We heard all the crowing and in some evenings we would hear an awful ruckus going on ver there so we had to go and check out what it was he was raising. He told us he was getting out of it and selling off all the chickens. He gave us 2 of the roosters. Since we don't have any mean roosters on our property they where sold to breeders that love the breed for their looks.

We have grandchildren we don't want hurt b floggng roosters. We have any turn mean they have got to go.

I enjoy living in a neighbor hood without restrictions. Ofcourse, this means putting up with a varity of folks in which some homes look very nice and some look like shacks. My only pev is folks letting their dogs run loose.

Games are very popular over here due to the fact that they are hardy foragers that can take care of themselves.
Most of my neighbors that have chickens have either all games, a mix of games with other breeds, and even mutts with game in their family tree. Seen a few neighbors with the tepee huts.

Alot of folks like to show their games.
I love the crowing. I have 4 wyandotte boys that crow when the neighbors roosters crow.

I have seen this before. Without proof that they are being raised to fight your only recourse is looking into getting a noise ordinance passed that would limit the number of roosters per acres of land. But you would have to get other neighbors support and it is not an easy fight.

What do you raise on your 80 acres?? It is rural, that's why ppl. move to the rural areas to raise animals, birds, etc...I live in the country and at one point my neighbor had about 25 head of cattle..in the summer the barn would stink to high heavens, but I didn't complain because it was his property and he lived where he could raise them. It's like someone moving to the country and then protesting about the neighbor raising chickens..oh wait, you did!!

I don't know, but 50 roosters isn't a little bit of noise. I could see if he moved next to a chicken factory and then complained, but just because you live in the country doesn't mean that you're not supposed to enjoy your property. If I was living next to a herd of cattle that stunk, I'd have a problem with that...unless of course I purposely moved there knowing about the cattle.

Country or no country, there has to be laws, and this rooster lover just might be breaking one. I would check into that first. If he is legally allowed to have as many roosters as he wants, then I would pursue the noise ordinances...as difficult that may be. No one should have to endure this amount of noise. Just as it's the neighbors property, it's the posters property also, and that is being infringed upon.

Yes, it would help a lot. Might want it a bit longer than his property frontage there. They build 14' walls by the freeways here now to block noise and it helps more than you'd expect. They are 14' because the expressway or freeway overpasses are so high.

BTW there is a documentary on exactly this same situation. Guy moved in after everyone else and started getting roosters. Their lives became hell. It is part of a documentary called The Natural History of the Chicken. Netflix has it for instant viewing.

It would be a touchy subject that's for sure. Folks can get a bit funny if they think you are taking away what they feel is their right; however, the OP deserves his/her peaceful space too. Other than suggesting a thick concrete wall as a noise barrer I am not sure how best to suggest to go.

Pursuing an ordinence to limit roosters or call to report noise violations could start a neighbor hate relationship.
What is this guy's personality like? Does he seem like the kind to hang on to his roosters and get angry easy or is he a reasonable type that would work with you on the noise issue?
