Rooster not breeding hens?

After talking to a few show breeders of cochins and reading up on It I learned it is actually very common in show lines to have to have to AI.

Have you trimmed George yet?

If not, I'd try that long before trying AI ...

It only takes a few seconds for the mating to take place, but if he is not actually making contact with the hens vent with his vent (his feathers in the way) as there is no penatration (more like a tongue less smooch!) ... then it will not work.

George has been trimmed as well as the girls but still no fertile eggs. He woos the girls but I've never seen him mount them since I got him last September. I thought maybe I was just missing it but after all the trimming and my other roosters proving it's not the girls I'm pretty sure it's just George.

I have George in a tractor with 3 girls and my barred (Ricky) is loose with 2 girls. Then I have 2 black pairs in smaller pens. George and Ricky used to be loose with all the girls before I got the other two pairs but one spring started they got into it and George was almost blinded by Ricky. My other two roosters are younger so I could try one of them in with George and the girls.
