I have BLRW six hens and one rooster in a breeding pen. I have been eager to start hatching some babies, but the eggs are not fertile. I put some in the bator and nothing happened. So I have been opening them and checking.... NOTHING. I understand that you don't always get to witness them doing "the deed" But i have had them for almost 6 months and have NEVER seen my rooster mount any hen.
Any suggestions to get the job done?
thanks

We have had trouble with young roosters before. If you separate him from the hens for a day and then put him back with them, you should see him getting the job done when you put him back with them. We replaced an older rooster this spring with a younger better looking rooster and two weeks later started finding un-fertile eggs in the incubator. About 75 un-fertile eggs so far. The older rooster got his job back. LoL!!!

He is an older guy. My mom suggested taking him out for a couple days. I thought maybe put another rooster in a crate next to them.... then he would be motivated to claim his ladies.
I guess I should give him a couple days away from them.

How did this go for you? I have the same problem with my BLRW splash roo...well...he fertilzed a few eggs, saw him doing the deed and now nothing...

same problem with a silkie roo and a buff brahma bantam both about 8 to 10 months old , did separating help?

Breeds like Wyandottes, Silkies and Brahmas tend to be extra fluffy on the back end. Sometimes they require trimming so they can make contact. You trim about an inch below the vent for roosters and above the vent for hens. I would try trimming them first. I've also notice, with only a single rooster (if thats what you've got going on), they don't seem as worried about their manly stuff. No competition I guess.

Good luck!
