Is it possible my husband saw my dominant rooster Pingu(5 months old, large mix breed) "mating" my 2nd from the top rooster ,Rusty (4 months old) today? He said he heard a weird noise and a wall of the barn shaking, so he went in and Pingu was biting Rusty's neck and was on top of him, just like when mating a hen. The two roos have been locked up together for 3 days now, due to over mating my hens- I'm trying to give the hens a break!!! My 2nd coop (my "rooster coop") is about 5 x 12. Lots of roosts, but not much to do. (the other hens are all out free ranging so they are doing nothing all day except for waiting to spy some hens to cluck at. )

What do you think? Do roosters do that? Mate each other to show dominance?

The thing is- i am planning on cooking my dominant rooster, and i want my 2nd from the top rooster to be my rooster. ( Roosters #3, 4 and 5 will also be dinner) Yes... we hatched out a lot of roos !!

Should I separate them? Will they hurt each other? I haven't seen any fighting, just avoidance of each other usually.

Yes roosters do that. As long as they're away from the hens they should be fine together because there won't be competition. The mating is just a harsh way of showing who's the boss and who's submissive.

I had a beautiful cockerel that was like your randy boy. I called him Black Jack Randall- named after a character on the show Outlander who took extreme pleasure in raping both men and women. He (the cockerel) showed no discretion between jumping on pullets or other cockerels.
