I have 5 roosters, one started crowing for the first time last week. He will only crow when a stranger comes over, is this some kind of alert to the others?

I think you might have a Rooster Dachshund cross.

My alpha roo always crows when he sees my car pull up. I didn't realize it until my daughter took my car one day - I was working in the coop - and they saw the car pulled up - all of the hens ran toward that corner of the run and the rooster started crowing like crazy... guess he figured there must be treats associated with that car coming in the driveway - even if the treat lady was already in their with em... lol

Yes, it is an alerting sound. Roosters will crow when there is an intruder, loud/annoying sound, when they're insecure or scared, and when there's a bright light shining in on their sleeping area.
