I need some new hens in my flock. There are some 8 week olds available locally from a straight run. How soon can you tell if you have a rooster or hen and what are the signs to look for?

BYC Rocks! Thanks in advance for all your comments!

What breed are they? Some can be sorted at hatch due to being sex linked. Some can be sorted by 8 weeks by comb development. Some are very difficult to tell until they lay or crow.
X2....at 8 weeks most laying breeds are pretty readily sorted

Bright red combs are usually roosters at this stage. If I ever look at a bird, and think is that a rooster, it almost always is, but I do remember, standing next to a big black "hen" the first time he crowed... and I had been doing chickens for a long time!
