My rooster has been doing the weirdest thing - at night, when he is on the roost and we reach in to pet him on the back, he always does a "duck and cover" kind of move - any ideas or thoughts on what this is all about???

Chickens can't see well at night. He's probably surprised and a little bit scared by the attention.

I also agree.
Chickens are most vulnerable to preditors while they sleep. That is why they roost. To get up off the ground away from preditors (at least that is what I read in a book about chickens, and it makes sence to me)

Thanks so much y'all - that makes perfect sense!!! I have to say, it is the funniest thing in the world to see - maybe I can get a video online soon!!
