Rooster pros/cons...

I had two RIR cockerels, which are a "mean breed" I've read on here. One is nice, one was dinner. For me it was just a toss up on the personality.

The bad one would bite me for no reason, and come running at me in the yard for just me being there. Unpredictible and mean.

The good one that I like WILL take a jump at you if you make one of his ladies squalk, but that's understandable. I can work in the yard with him without being attacked or bitten. He chased off a raccoon the very same night that I killed his brother, so that cemented in my mind that we were gonna keep him unless he just suddenly got meaner.
I trust my roo to protect and sound the alarm for his ladies. Sure he can't do it all, but he does what he can.

I like my roo.

I have a very sweet Speckled Sussex. He has always been very laid back, even when he was younger and housed with an OEGB that was antagonizing him. He was 3 times the size of that little squirt, but he just ignored him. The only time I had any trouble with him was when he took a dislike to the top hen in a new group of girls that I introduced to him. I had to separate her because he was getting entirely to rough. I don't know what that was about, but he just didn't like her. She is a little "butch."

He has never shown any aggression toward me or any person and is really very friendly. When I come out to feed the Sussex are always the first ones there and always under foot, jumping up to take it out my hand.

Overall, the calmest and friendliest roosters I've ever had were Buff Orpingtons or Partridge Cochins.

But, as said above in a few places, every rooster is different. For example, some people have had real bad luck with Phoenix roosters; however, I have a 7 year old Phoenix rooster right now that from the moment he hatched he's been just great. He has never once attacked or even shown aggression towards a person, he's a great protector to his flock (even as old as he is getting, he can still spot a hawk better than any of the rest), and he has always had an incredibly calm demeanor toward everyone and everything (even other roosters, oddly) he shares the barnyard with. But he is no lap rooster. He'll take food from my hands occasionally, but very cautiously; and he does not like to be caught or picked up!

It's the luck of the draw I guess. Good luck!!

Roosters can be soo fun! They have lots of personality, and a huge vocabulary, and it is wonderful to watch them take care of their hens. I would get another rooster in a heartbeat if my husband and neighbor weren't so against it. If personality is very important to you, get a grown rooster, along with a hen he knows to keep him company during quarantine. There are lots of nice roosters around that need homes! You will love a good rooster.
