rooster protecting human? is this possible??

I wouldn't worry about your rooster being unable to identify threats after being taught to respect people. My roosters are very people-friendly, but still race out to defend the girls from would-be predators.

Once, a military helicopter flew over our house during a practice flight. All the girls ran for cover and our rooster Gryffindor charged out to fight it off. Such a brave rooster!

she has fed them irregularly since they were chicks. however, this time she didnt. perhaps the sound of the swooshing snow attire played a significant role. either way that method seemed to have worked for the time being. in combination with her feeding the flock more we should be a well rounded excellent rooster ;) thanks for the advice

In my experience, roosters just don't tend to like little kids. I have scars of my own to attest to that. There are exceptions to the rule, of course... We had a field trip visit our chickens recently and the roosters tolerated all of the fumbling, noisy, scary child creatures with the utmost of grace--I was so proud! But I would always use caution when having a small child around a rooster with a history of naughty behavior... shoot, I use caution even if the roosters aren't naughty!

That being said, you did everything right. :) Rock on, alb.

thanks prairiechickens! i believe its more important to teach kids about animals how to handle them, and when to stay away, than it is to teach the animal to be good around children. Afterall, he is a rooster, and at the perfect height to cause damage too ;) I am sure looking forward to the day she swoops in and picks him up, or pins down a rooster for being a bully, or decides she would like to push a chicken around in her wagon.
