ok i have a broody & i went out to chunk her outside to make sure she ate & drank, any way when i put her out he came over with one wing down stomping his feet & kinda moved in almost a circle with his feathers kinda fluffed . he didnt peck her or any thing. is that him stating his place or is it the roo dance?

Old time cockers call that "cutting a wing". Most folks on this site refer to it as the roo dance. He`s asserting himself to her. Very normal. What isn`t normal is you putting her out of her nest to make sure she eats and drinks. She will do that when she thinks it`s time, without any outside help. During her broody period, she needs privacy and solitude. She should be away from any other chickens and left alone to do her job. Don`t worry about her. Food and water and solitude, with a nest at ground level so she can safely take the chicks in and out of the nest, is it. Also, not a good idea to disturb her during the hatching process. A day or 2 after they hatch, she will bring them out to show you. Then you can enjoy them. Have fun.....Pop

He is just sweet talking the hen. My roosters do that all the time. It is also a signal that the rooster wants to mate.

ohh about the taking her out thing. i must have misunderstood , i figured she needed to be made to eat & drink & poop . when i put her out she did do all of & right back in her nest she went. ( i just dont want her to starve her self ) thank you all. well with his dancing around maybe i will have more eggs coming from my other girls , i figure it could be about any time . they are bantam cochins and they are about 20 weeks now.

Lollipop gave you good advice. The only time I would interupt a broody hen is if its way passed her hatching date and she has been setting a Longgggggg time. I try to remove the bad eggs and break up their broodyness beofre they starve. You'll note when picking them up that they will feel oftly thin. During a normal cycle, they will lose weight, but will be ok on their own. I hope you get chicks soon. Late in the year, but always fun.
