I dont have chickens yet. We are moving this summer and then I will be able to keep them. I wanted to start off with just hens as I am interested in having fresh eggs for my family. I like the idea of having a rooster but I until I get to know my neighbors I was thinking just having hens is a good idea. I dont want to get off on the wrong foot with them.

Can I introduce a rooster next year? Would I be better off getting an adult rooster or starting with a baby chick? Will the hens accept him?

You can rest assured that you can introduce a rooster at any time into the flock but be sure to get one that is the same age or older that way you won't have any integration problems you have with younger birds. so yeah your plan sounds good with the nieghbors in mind, good thinking.
