Rooster Question

We have a total of 7 roosters and plenty of hens....I think he was just a mean Roo. I have never had one that bad before.

I think everyone needs to remember they are still animals not humans.

They are chickens, not generic animals. They can be individuals just as humans and humans exhibit no consistent characterics that make them worthy of being considered exceptional as in different from all other animals that are not human.

I like animals just as much as I do humans, Katesfarm. Some animals I prefer to some humans. I know my rooster is an animal. And I don't discriminate against humans based on intelligence, so why should I discriminate against animals based on intelligence? I had a mentally disabled child in my Sunday School class the other day, and our lesson was on acceptance of those with mental deficiencies, coincidentally. I wouldn't discriminate against my rooster, likewise, based on his intelligence or lack thereof, keesmom.

Yes they were all hand raised. I guess I will have to see with age how they turn out. All of them seem to be very different. The ones who are more out going are my favorite. I have a frizzle roo that is shy or maybe embarrassed by his feathers ha ha!

This is just from my experience. When a Rooster attacks you you have to stand your ground. I had one that attacked me and I gave him a boot clear across my yard with the side of my foot and he went *** over applecart across the yard. A couple of days later he tried it again so I booted him again. After that he hasn't tried it again. If you chase them with a broom then they will be afraid of the broom and not you so the broom becomes the alpha not you. Also if you can pick the rooster up and take hold his comb and pull his head down until it touches his chest. Do not let his head up until he relaxes then let his head come back up and repeat and as long as he is resistant with his head down in his chest just hold it there until he quits resisting. Do this until you can put his head down without him resisting. This shows him that you are the alpha. I have had a lot of roosters and it works. Also if the Roo does this to another member of the family the process has to be repeated until he recognizes that person too as an alpha.

I wish my personality were such that I could implement them, but I just can't. I'm not that assertive. I don't really want to be the Alpha, if the truth be known. I mean, I don't like getting pecked, no, but I have no desire to dominate the rooster, either. I'm the baby of my family. I am not a leader type. I'm easygoing and laid back. I would feel I was humiliating him by kicking him or doing that to his comb, and I don't want to humiliate him.

But I do appreciate your kind sharing of all these ideas. I know they have worked well for those who can do them.

I didn't choose to take on this rooster. His egg was given to me. But he's here now, so I have to make the best of it I can, based on his personality and my own. :>)
